Organic cistus essential oil is obtained through steam distillation from the cistus plant, also known in Greece as Rockrose.

Cistus ladaniferus, a member of the Cistaceae family, is an evergreen shrub native to the Western Mediterranean. In the Eastern Mediterranean, the species Cistus creticus (Cretan Rockrose) thrives, reaching heights of up to 2 meters. The young shoots are hairless, sticky, and have aromatic resin. The leaves are simple, green, and without stalks, while the flowers are white, hermaphroditic, and actinomorphic, blooming from April to May. The fruit is a spherical capsule.

There is no doubt that this plant, native to the Eastern Mediterranean region, particularly in some Greek islands (e.g., Crete) and the Middle East, has been known and used for centuries. It has even been mentioned in the famous Ebers papyrus (dating around 1550 BC). The gum—referred to in ancient Greek as “lídanon” or “ládanon”—was known as “ladanum” by the Arabs and was used in worship rituals and as incense. Herodotus recorded how the "resin" of cistus was collected in his time; it would stick to the wool of sheep, and shepherds would comb it out once the animals were fed. It was used in various ointments. Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and later the Roman encyclopedist Celsus (c. 25 BC - c. 50 AD), known for his medical work "De Medicina," all mention cistus in their writings.

Organic cistus essential oil is a liquid with a dark brown to amber color, characterized by an intense, woody, and amber aroma. The main chemical constituents of the essential oil are α-pinene, camphene, para-cymene, trans-pinocarveol, trimethylcyclohexanone, borneol, limonene, γ-terpinene, 1,8-cineole, verbenone, and terpineol-4.

Organic cistus essential oil is commonly used in aromatherapy due to its antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, calming, moisturizing, and tonic properties. It can be used in the production of cosmetic formulations.

The essential oil of Cistus Ladaniferus, also known as Rockrose, is extracted via steam distillation from the flowers and leaves of the plant. Its main components are α-pinene, camphene, bornyl acetate, and γ-terpinene. Known as Rockrose, it produces a balsamic resin, labdanum, which was used as incense in the religious ceremonies of the Egyptians.

It is considered, along with Italian Helichrysum essential oil, the strongest anti-wrinkle oil.
