Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) is the common name for the plant. The essential oil is derived from the distillation of the leaves and flowers, offering a fresh and cool aroma.
The organic peppermint essential oil is obtained from fresh or dried peppermint (Mentha piperita) through steam distillation. The yield of essential oil from the plant material ranges from 0.1% to 1%.
Organic peppermint essential oil is a colorless to yellow-green liquid. It has a strong, fresh, and characteristic minty scent. The essential oil easily dissolves in alcohol (1:5 ethanol 70%), vegetable oils, and other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water. The main component is menthol, while lower concentrations include menthone, menthyl acetate, menthofuran, limonene, and pinene isomers.
The components of organic peppermint essential oil have medicinal properties. Peppermint has long been known as a medicinal herb and is one of the most recognized home remedies. Recent studies have shown that peppermint essential oil possesses strong bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, anthelmintic, and antimicrobial actions. It can be used for hepatitis, herpes, cystitis, prostatitis, and renal colic. For applying peppermint essential oil, direct application to the relevant areas and bath oils are recommended. Additionally, organic peppermint essential oil has a stimulating and invigorating effect on the digestive tract. For pancreatic and liver disorders, dyspepsia, nausea, or vomiting, it can be used internally as well as in bath oils. Another significant effect of peppermint essential oil is its action against tension headaches. Furthermore, it has an expectorant effect when inhaled or used as a bath oil, making it suitable for colds. It also aids in wound healing and can be applied directly to minor cuts and to alleviate rheumatic pain.
Organic peppermint essential oil is utilized in aromatherapy for its stimulating and tonic properties against neurogenic dystonia (movement disorders) and fatigue (general weakness). For application, it is recommended to use it as a bath oil or massage oil, and through an aromatic lamp. Its aroma has a refreshing effect on the room air.
Peppermint essential oil is used in aromatherapy for weakness, lethargy, nausea, fever, headache, sinusitis, improving breathing, and enhancing mental clarity and memory.
