Niaouli (Melaleuca Viridiflora) is a small evergreen tree reaching heights of up to 10m, belonging to the Myrtaceae family. It is native to the forested areas, marshes, and streams of the monsoonal regions of northern Australia and New Guinea.
Niaouli essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the leaves and young branches of the plant and has a refreshing aroma characterized by sweet, cool top notes reminiscent of camphor, with an undertone akin to eucalyptus. The main aromatic compounds are monoterpenes: alpha-pinene, limonene, monoterpenols: alpha-terpineol, terpene oxides: 1,8-cineole, and sesquiterpenols: viridiflorol—substances with strong therapeutic action.
Niaouli essential oil is an excellent tonic oil that enhances the immune system by stimulating the body’s natural defenses. It is particularly helpful in cases of allergic reactions. Additionally, due to its expectorant and decongestant properties, it is used for “cleansing” the lungs and provides significant relief from persistent coughs, asthma, bronchitis, flu, sinusitis, nasal congestion, and throat irritation. With its strong sedative and muscle-relaxing properties, it is especially recommended for insomnia, anxiety, and neuromuscular tension, as well as for its cardiotonic effects. It is also considered a strong venotonic, making it effective for treating venous insufficiency and the sensation of heaviness in the legs. Dermatologically, Niaouli essential oil shows rich antiseptic and bactericidal action, aiding in the treatment of skin inflammations, acne, burns, wounds, and chilblains.
Recent studies have demonstrated that Niaouli essential oil has strong antibacterial properties. It works against staphylococcus, pneumococcus, streptococcus, enterococcus, and mycobacteria. It is primarily used on the chest for inhalations, as a poultice, binding, or bath oil. In cases of severe wounds, abscesses, and other skin inflammations, Niaouli essential oil can also be applied. It is effective against viruses and fungi; various herpes viruses, hepatitis viruses, and Candida can be controlled through direct application or bath oils. In inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, Niaouli essential oil can also be used as an ointment, bath oil, or massage oil.
Finally, it finds wide application in cosmetics as an additive in creams and body lotions, as it appears to protect the skin from aging, providing a silky softness and radiance.
Niaouli essential oil combines excellently with: Basil, Cajeput, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Blueberry, Orange, Pine, Rosemary, Mint, Tea Tree, and Thyme.
