Palmarosa, scientifically known as Cymbopogon Martinii, is a member of the aromatic tropical grass genus Cymbopogon, which also includes lemongrass and citronella. Native to the Indian subcontinent, it is widely cultivated in Madagascar, India, Brazil, and the Comoros Islands. The essential oil of palmarosa has been known since the 18th century, referred to as "Indian" or "Turkish geranium," and was exported from Bombay to Constantinople and Bulgaria, often used as an adulterant for rose oil.
The essential oil is extracted from the plant's flowers through steam distillation and has a sweet, delicate, floral aroma reminiscent of a blend of rose and geranium. The main chemical constituents include alcohols such as geraniol and linalool, as well as esters like geranyl acetate, which possess notable antiseptic, antimicrobial, bactericidal, and fungicidal properties.
Palmarosa essential oil is primarily recommended for anti-aging treatments, as it tones and rejuvenates aging skin cells. Its balancing properties regulate oil and moisture levels, making it suitable for both dry and oily skin. Additionally, it enhances the body's natural defenses and is considered one of the strongest fungicides and microbicides, making it particularly useful for various skin conditions such as acne, dermatitis, eczema, and shingles.
Psychologically, it has a calming and uplifting effect, reducing anxiety and creating a sense of security. As a massage oil, it is ideal for relieving neuralgia, lumbago, sciatica, and rheumatic pains.
Moreover, palmarosa essential oil is effective against fungi (urethritis, cystitis, vaginitis, cervicitis, salpingitis) and viruses (viral enteritis, bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis). In cases of functional heart disorders, placing the oil on the chest can have a cardiotonic effect. During slow labor, using palmarosa essential oil on the lower back or through inhalation can facilitate the birthing process.
In aromatherapy, palmarosa essential oil is used for its stimulating and invigorating properties. It is especially recommended for fears, mental fatigue from stress, or nervousness, and can be used in aroma lamps, in scrubs, and as bath or massage oils. It also acts as an antidepressant when used in an aroma lamp or in massage oil blends, providing a refreshing effect on the air.
Palmarosa essential oil blends well with: Geranium, Bergamot, Lavender, Chamomile, Cedar, Melissa, Verbena, Sandalwood.
