Sweet Birch, known scientifically as Betula lenta, is a medium-sized deciduous tree that can reach heights of 20-25 meters. It is endemic to the northern hemisphere, growing from Canada and the southeastern USA to Russia and Eastern Europe. Sweet Birch is regarded as a sacred tree among the Turkic peoples of northern Siberia, with local traditions suggesting that a male and female birch appeared at the dawn of humanity.
The essential oil of Sweet Birch is distilled from the bark of the tree and has a strong camphor-like aroma, reminiscent of the plant Gaultheria, characterized by its cool, medicinal scent due to its rich content of salicylic acid and methyl salicylate.
Sweet Birch essential oil is well-known for effectively relieving nasal congestion through inhalation, as well as for alleviating muscle pain, arthritis, and rheumatism. It also has significant antioxidant and detoxifying properties, contributing positively to anti-aging by reducing wrinkles and tightening the skin.
Two key properties of Sweet Birch essential oil, attributed to salicylic acid and methyl salicylate—both recognized antimicrobial and bactericidal agents in medicine—are its ability to protect the skin from bacterial and fungal infections. It helps reduce joint and muscle pain, as well as pain associated with headaches and toothaches. Additionally, it acts as an antispasmodic, relieving cramps throughout the body. Sweet Birch essential oil can be used as a tonic, providing a sense of strength, warmth, and vitality, making it ideal for very cold climates. However, it is toxic and may cause skin irritation.
