Hyssop, scientifically known as Hyssopus officinalis (medicinal hyssop), is a fragrant, perennial herb (growing up to 60 cm) from the Lamiaceae family. It is native to southern Europe, primarily found in Spain and southern France, as well as in the Middle East and the Caspian Sea region, thriving at low altitudes up to 400 m. It features lanceolate leaves without petioles and dark blue flowers with purple stamens.

The essential oil of Hyssop is extracted from the distillation of the whole plant and has a yellow-green color with a strong, sweet scent featuring hints of honey. Its high note is camphoraceous, while its middle notes reveal a light spicy fragrance. The main components of its chemical composition include ketones: pinocamphone (40-45%), terpenes: cis, trans pinocamphone (10-14%), and phenyl-methyl-ethers: elemol (3-6%), substances with strong antiseptic, expectorant, antispasmodic, and soothing properties.

The edible Hyssop essential oil from Herbstore.gr is an excellent product with a wide range of applications, primarily attributed to its antispasmodic properties. It is particularly effective for respiratory conditions, believed to open the lungs, combat infection, and clear mucus. In a concentration of 0.2/000, it is said to even inactivate the tuberculosis bacillus. It is indicated for treating asthma, bronchitis, cough, and chronic catarrh. Its diaphoretic properties make it particularly beneficial for influenza and common colds. Additionally, it is used to regulate blood pressure and acts as a neurotonic in cases of anxiety, stress, and tension. Due to its antiseptic properties, it can be used externally for the treatment and care of eczema and dermatitis, as well as for disinfecting wounds and bruises.

Tip! For bronchitis or chest colds, you can perform rubs by diluting 6 drops of Hyssop oil with 5 drops of Myrtle and 4 drops of Bay in 30ml of almond oil.

The essential oil of Hyssop blends well with: Angelica, Orange, Celery, and Rosemary.
