Origin: Greece, Imathia region (collected from the Pieria Mountains at low elevation)
Storage: Keep in a dark, cool place (5°C – 15°C)
Preparation: Add 1 teaspoon of dried marshmallow (or a small pinch of uncrushed) to a container, add 1 cup of water, boil the mixture for 5-10 minutes, then strain and drink.
Historical Notes: Hippocrates prescribed marshmallow root infusions for treating bruises and blood loss from wounds. The ancient Greek healer Dioscorides recommended marshmallow root in poultices for insect bites and prescribed infusions for toothache and vomiting, as well as an antidote for poisons. Arab physicians in the 10th century used poultices made from marshmallow leaves to address inflammation, while early European traditional healers used marshmallow root both internally and externally for its soothing properties. By the mid-19th century, it was included in the United States Pharmacopeia.
