The Lemon Balm tincture is made from soaking the leaves and flowers of lemon balm in an alcoholic solution (grappa) for a period of 4-6 weeks. During this time, the active ingredients dissolve into the alcoholic solution, resulting in the tincture.
Lemon Balm Tincture (Melissa officinalis) contains the same active components as the dried herb lemon balm. Lemon balm appears to be a herb with many uses—clinical studies are identifying more and more of its properties. In modern herbal therapy, lemon balm is primarily used to address disorders of the nervous system and to prevent ulcer development. It is considered an anxiolytic (showing antidepressant effects) and a mild sedative. Consuming lemon balm helps manage anxiety and tension while also being effective for insomnia. Clinical studies have shown that its effects are mainly due to the rosmarinic acid present in the herb (and not the essential oils as some suggest). Recent systematic research among students indicated that consuming lemon balm significantly reduced stress during exams, leading to better concentration and performance (for up to 6 hours after consumption). Regarding the use of lemon balm for gastrointestinal discomfort, studies have shown that it protects against ulcers. Specifically, it appeared to increase the secretion of prostaglandin E2 and mucus from the body while reducing acid secretion.
Lemon balm exhibits strong antioxidant activity and moderate antibacterial properties. Its external use (in cream form) helps treat herpes simplex. In recent years, clinical research has been conducted regarding the positive effects of consuming this herb on thyroid regulation and the management of HIV-1. However, since no definitive conclusions have been drawn, individuals on thyroid medication (e.g., thyroxine) should avoid consumption.
Herbal tinctures retain all the active ingredients of the plant, are particularly easy to take, and are entirely natural. They undoubtedly surpass dietary supplements in pill form, as they contain no chemicals or preservatives and are absorbed much more effectively by the body.
Herbal tinctures are very potent and should be consumed according to the provided instructions. The usual dosage is 0.5-1ml (approximately 10-20 drops per day). They should not be consumed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
