The plant is known from the writings of Dioscorides and Pliny as an herb against cough. At times, mixtures were smoked with other herbs, and even today it serves as an alternative to tobacco. The genus name (Farfarae folia) comes from the Latin words tussis (cough) and agree (to drive away).
Properties:
- Can be used for chronic or acute bronchitis, irritating cough, whooping cough, and asthma.
- Its soothing expectorant action makes it useful for most respiratory issues, including chronic forms of emphysema. As a mild diuretic, it has been used for cystitis.
- It has tonic properties and contains a mucilage that acts as a soothing agent for mucous membranes.

Preparation:
1 teaspoon of Tussilago is steeped in 1 cup of boiling water in a covered container, left for 5-10 minutes, and then strained before use. Do not use excessively!
