The orange belongs to the citrus family, and there is no one on the planet who hasn’t encountered it. It is the fruit of the orange tree, spherical in shape, with a bright orange color—except for the sanguine variety. Its skin is tough and covered with small dimples, and inside it has a white covering that protects the flesh. The taste can be sweet, sour, or sweet-sour.
Oranges are rich in vitamins C and A, potassium, calcium, iron, iodine, phosphorus, manganese, folic acid, sodium, chlorine, and zinc. Thus, their contribution to maintaining good health is considered undeniable.
Dried orange peel can be used in its dry state or can be rehydrated for the same fantastic flavor. When used in its dehydrated form, it replaces one-third of the amount needed when fresh. It is used in desserts such as biscotti, scones, cheesecakes, cookies, and various pies. While the peel of most fruits is often discarded, the experts say that orange peel has beauty benefits, especially for health:
Properties:
- Improves digestion
- Freshens breath
- Strengthens bones
- Protects the heart
- Reduces inflammation
- May help against cancer
- Aids with colds
Interestingly, the peel of this fruit has benefits equal to those of its flesh for the body. Orange peel contains hesperidin, a substance that metabolizes lipids in the blood and helps lower cholesterol. It also contains pectin, which protects against various stomach and digestive problems. Lastly, it has a high vitamin content that boosts the immune system and protects against common colds and flu.
