Historical Information:
After Hippocrates and the Roman period, Chasteberry reappeared in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Many Renaissance doctors and herbalists prescribed Chasteberry for spleen and liver problems, as well as for madness and epilepsy. It was also used, combined with pennyroyal, to treat menstrual problems and infertility in women. In 1930, Dr. Gerhard Madaus from Germany conducted the first scientific research on Chasteberry's effects on the female hormonal system, and he developed a preparation from dried Chasteberry fruits. Since then, this preparation has been used in all studies on Chasteberry, revealing that its fruits contain 1.3-1.6% essential oil, 22% sabinene (a natural monoterpene), 1.8-cineole, 6% α-Pinene, flavonoids, and iridoid glycosides. The essential oil of Chasteberry also has antibacterial properties. Further research in Germany in 2001, involving 1,542 women diagnosed with premenstrual syndrome, showed that 90% of them experienced symptom relief after taking Chasteberry extract for an average of 170 days.
