Chios mastic is the natural resin that comes from the trunk and branches of the mastic tree. When exuded, it has the form of a sticky and clear liquid, solidifying into irregular shapes after about 15 days. It was the first natural chewing gum of the ancient world and was used for cleaning teeth and freshening breath. Mastic has numerous uses, the most well-known being chewing gum and flavoring for confectionery, as well as mastic liqueur. Additionally, the earliest references to the mastic tree and Chios mastic can be found in antiquity, particularly from Herodotus (484-420 BC), who specifically mentions that in ancient Greece, they chewed the dried resinous liquid flowing from the bark of the mastic tree. In later medical texts, numerous recipes featuring mastic as a key ingredient highlight its beneficial effects on human health and its attributed properties. It was commonly used in combination with other natural ingredients to treat a variety of ailments.

Indeed, due to its strong anti-inflammatory properties from eleanolic and oleanolic acids (3-oxotriterpenes), mastic acts as a healing agent for specific organ inflammations, starting from periodontitis, esophagitis, gastritis, duodenal ulcers to colitis and hemorrhoids. It also prevents stagnation in these areas, inhibiting symptoms such as dyspepsia or bloating. Furthermore, digestion is aided by the reflex secretion of saliva and gastric fluids when chewing mastic. It is a fact that mastic is still used today for softening tumors in the rectum, chest, liver, parotids, spleen, stomach, intestine, and esophagus, as well as for children’s diarrhea. Additionally, it is considered analgesic, antitussive, appetite stimulant, aphrodisiac, astringent, erythropoietic, diuretic, expectorant, and hemostatic. Mastic is cited as the traditional antidote for abscesses, acne, cancer, ulcers, carcinomas, malignant pustules, cardiopathy, warts, lethargy, gingivitis, bad breath, leucorrhea, mastitis, tuberculosis, and atherosclerosis.

Recent studies by doctors at the University of Nottingham indicate that even in minimal doses (1 mg per day for 2 weeks), mastic can heal digestive ulcers caused by the Helicobacter pylori bacterium due to its antimicrobial action. Additionally, it has a significant effect on liver function, activating its detoxifying activities. This way, cholesterol is absorbed, reducing its concentration in the blood and consequently lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Mastic also exhibits diuretic properties and is important in inhibiting leukotriene synthesis.

Further modern scientific research that led to the isolation and identification of ursolic and oleanolic acids has revealed and confirmed that many of the medicinal properties of mastic, such as anticancer, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, and antimicrobial (against various pathogenic microorganisms like staphylococci and salmonella), can be primarily attributed to ursolic acid, as well as its isomer, oleanolic acid. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the addition of natural Chios mastic in toothpaste, mouth rinses, and mouthwashes enhances the immune system of the tissues between teeth and gums, thus acting against plaque formation and other periodontal diseases.
