Historical Notes:
Elder is considered one of the oldest and most popular medicinal plants. It also plays a significant role in mythology. For the Germans, it was the dwelling place of Holle, the goddess who protected homes. Thus, cutting down an elder tree was considered a grave sin. Finds of elder fruits in prehistoric settlements confirm the ancient use of this tree. In antiquity, elder was used as a black dye for hair. Writings from that time already mention it as an effective medicinal remedy.
Scientifically Documented Applications:
The E-Commission recommends the use of elderflower for colds.
In animal studies, an increase in bronchial secretion was demonstrated.
