Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is a small perennial herb from the Mackinlayaceae family. It is endemic to certain regions of Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Iran. In each region, it is used in different ways. For example, in Sri Lanka, its leaves are prepared as malluma (a side dish for rice), in Indonesia, it is used in Aceh-style salads, and in Vietnam and Thailand, it is used to make drinks.

Known as "Tiger grass" or "Madécassol" in France, this herb thrives in tropical, marshy areas of India, Southeast Asia, and South America. In Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed to grant longevity to… elephants!

Benefits of Centella:

  • Healing and Regeneration: Known for its soothing and healing properties, it not only alleviates inflamed and damaged skin but is also rich in amino acids that help maintain hydration and stimulate collagen production for faster healing.
  • Anti-Acne Properties: Its compounds have proven anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, helping to prevent breakouts. Particularly, madecassoside is known to reduce inflammation and suppress acne scar formation.
  • Minimization of Aging Signs: The leaves are rich in natural amino acids and antioxidants that combat free radicals, such as vitamins A and B. Additionally, Centella boosts collagen production, which helps maintain skin elasticity and strengthens its natural moisture barrier. It is also known to prevent pigmentation and other visible effects of sun exposure and UV damage, making it an excellent tool against aging.

Used in Ayurveda for thousands of years, Gotu Kola is referenced in the ancient Indian text Susruta Samhita. In China, it has been used for over 2,000 years and is known as "the miraculous elixir of life," a name given by Li Ching-Yun, a herbalist rumored to have lived 256 years. In Europe, its widespread use began around 1800, when it became recognized as a medicinal herb in France.

In modern herbal therapy, Gotu Kola is utilized for a wide range of health issues. This herb is thought to have calming and anxiolytic properties. It is believed to have a "soothing" effect on the central nervous system while increasing GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) levels in the brain. This action is thought to "revitalize" the entire nervous system, positively impacting memory and concentration. It is also said that consuming Gotu Kola improves blood circulation, strengthens blood vessel walls (reducing sclerosis), and lowers blood pressure. In this way, it is reported to be effective for conditions like phlebitis and poor circulation in the extremities. Externally, Gotu Kola is considered to significantly aid in wound care, improving blood circulation and detoxifying the skin locally. Many herbalists regard Gotu Kola as one of the most important tonic herbs for the human body, often referring to it as the "elixir of youth" or "elixir of life."

Key Properties: Tonic for the nervous system, stimulant for blood circulation (especially in the extremities and brain), anti-inflammatory, stimulates collagen production.

Uses: For enhancing memory, Alzheimer’s, mental stimulation, anxiety and depression, venous circulation issues. Externally, it is used for wound healing, psoriasis, and burns.

Summary:

  • Stress Management: The herbal extract of Gotu Kola may help reduce the effects of stress and anxiety, contributing to relaxation and relief.
  • Good Circulation: Known to improve blood circulation, it can help maintain healthy vessels and reduce venous insufficiency.
  • Cognitive Revitalization: Its natural properties make it useful in enhancing cognitive function and memory.
  • Skin Health Support: The antioxidants in Gotu Kola help maintain healthy skin, reducing signs of aging.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Action: The herbal extract can help reduce inflammation in the body, alleviating pain and redness.

Precautions: Not recommended for individuals with diabetes.

Caution: Gotu Kola interacts with medications that act as central nervous system depressants, so they should not be administered together, as increased sedation and drowsiness may occur. Avoid using Gotu Kola if taking medications that negatively affect liver function due to potential interactions that could cause liver damage.

Use during pregnancy and lactation should be avoided due to a lack of sufficient safety data.
