Goldenrod or Solidago (Solidago virgaurea) is a beautiful perennial plant that reaches heights of 20 to 100 centimeters. It grows in forest clearings, along roadsides, in woods, and in both lowland and mountainous areas. The name Solidago comes from the Latin word "solido," meaning "to unite," reflecting its attributed healing properties.
Traditionally, a lotion was made from it to treat bee stings, and it was also used as a healing remedy for sore throats. The Arabs cultivated the plant and have used it as a medicinal herb for centuries.
The species of Solidago used in Europe was introduced to Great Britain from the Middle East, and its original name was "the herb of the infidels for wounds," as it was used by Saracens for wound healing.
In the 15th and 16th centuries in Europe, it was used for the same purpose. Culpepper mentions its use for stabilizing loose teeth and treating nephrolithiasis. Over the years, Solidago has been used in traditional medicine to treat tuberculosis, diabetes, hepatomegaly, gout, hemorrhoids, and asthma. It is also recommended for rheumatic diseases, oral and throat inflammation, and slow-healing wounds.
Goldenrod is also used for treating infections from tuberculosis that reactivate after periods of dormancy, diabetes, liver swelling, hemorrhoids, internal bleeding, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and enlarged prostate. It is recommended for rheumatic diseases, oral and throat inflammation, and slow-healing wounds.
Notably, it is considered a valuable medicinal plant, with renowned herbalist Maria Treben stating that all our emotions relate to the kidneys and that it positively affects our emotional state. Therefore, it should be consumed in cases of emotional disappointment or stress.
Some people use it to increase urine flow in an effort to treat inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract and stones in the kidney or urinary system. Goldenrod is used as a mouthwash for inflammation of the mouth and throat, and it can also be applied directly to the skin to enhance wound healing.
