Historical Facts:
The name thyme comes from the Greek word "θυμός" (spirit, mood). Its original meaning was smoke, likely due to the strong aroma of thyme. Ancient Egyptians are believed to have used it for embalming their dead. Its therapeutic effects on the lungs and bronchi became known only in the Middle Ages. The abbess Hildegard von Bingen praised thyme for treating shortness of breath, asthma, and whooping cough. The widespread use of this aromatic herb in cooking is a good example of health protection with natural ingredients. Thyme has antibacterial properties and, with its digestion-regulating effects, makes many dishes, especially meats and cold cuts, more beneficial.
Scientifically Supported Applications:
Both the E Commission and ESCOP endorse the use of thyme for respiratory tract inflammation, bronchitis, and whooping cough. ESCOP additionally supports its use for gastric mucosal inflammation and bad breath.
Thyme primarily enhances expectoration in cough (due to its terpene content) and soothes cough spasms (due to its flavonoids).
The thyme oil contained in the essential oil (up to 50%) also exhibits strong antimicrobial action against various bacteria, viruses, and fungi and enhances skin blood circulation.
Thyme extract also possesses good antioxidant properties.
